Birds of a Feather Flock to The Wildlife Experience

DENVER – April 2, 2004 – A new exhibit, Birds In Flight , migrates to The Wildlife Experience on April 3, and displays a wide variety of birds photographically captured in mid-flight.

Photographer Russell C. Hansen (1921-2002) photographed birds in flight for more than 25 years. During this time, he captured more than 130 species of birds within three feet of his camera, and used a variety of techniques to lure birds close to his camera. Hansen's photographs have left a unique impression in the world of wildlife photography.

Hansen's talent with high-speed photography began during his time as a physics teacher in Connecticut. With his students, he was photographing bullets passing through playing cards, light bulbs and bars of soap. He then turned his attention to capturing split-second moments of birds in flight and traveled around the world pursuing his new photographic passion.

Hansen designed and built the electronic flashes and circuitry necessary to stop the wing action of a bird as it breaks a light beam, triggering a motor-driven Hasselblad camera. To produce the multiple images, he designed and built a computer that measures flight speed and precisely spaces the firing of up to six electronic flashes at uniform time intervals. Consequently, fast or slow flying birds or bats will always appear with uniform spacing on the photograph.

Russell Hansen's photographs have appeared in a number of periodicals and books. He has lectured widely, and his traveling exhibit, Birds in Flight , has been featured at more than 50 museums throughout the US since 1992. Hansen has also received two grants from the National Geographic Society for multiple-image photography of birds and bats in flight.

Birds in Flight will open at The Wildlife Experience on April 3 and will be on display through June 20. For more information on this exhibit or The Wildlife Experience, call (720) 488-3300 or visit us online at thewildlifeexperience.org.
