DENVER—April 18, 2006—After months of construction and renovation, The Wildlife Experience is getting ready to unveil the centerpiece of its efforts: Discovery Den.

Discovery Den is a one-of-a-kind children's gallery created for kids six to twelve years of age. Discovery Den, and its counterpart, Cubs Corner (for our younger visitors), provide playful learning experiences that inspire the imagination through discovery and hands-on activities.

Both exhibits are places where a child can immerse themselves into an environment that encourages fun and learning at the same time. These exhibits were designed to provide children with knowledge about basic concepts found in nature. For example, “Nature’s Pyramid,” one of the new interactive elements within Discovery Den, will teach visitors the concept of food chains, why they are necessary in the wild, the effect natural and man-made disasters have on an area’s food chain and what humans can do to keep nature in balance.

Additionally, other elements, such as “H20hhhh!!!!” and “Avalanche,” will illustrate the water cycle, the importance of water in the state of Colorado and that a major portion of our water comes from high upon a mountain and is seasonally stored in snow pack that is released during spring runoff. Beyond learning where water comes from, visitors will learn how water is used to generate electricity and how it is cleaned after it is returned to the ecosystem. Other topics such as erosion and habitat and areas for arts, crafts and observation are included in Discovery Den, along with “Max Brown’s Theater,” which will show videos on a variety of topics from around the world.

Cubs Corner, which is geared towards children up to age five, will introduce basic concepts and will have an area where kids can dress up like a variety of animals, providing an opportunity to learn about basic physiology. The gallery also includes a reading area and an arts and crafts area where children can create their own artwork. The “cubs” in Cubs Corner can build and solve puzzles that correlate to specific environments, such as a rainforest, mountain or the ocean. All of these elements create an environment of non-stop fun and learning.

The Wildlife Experience believes in the future of our children, and with the knowledge and the senses of discovery and adventure they receive from The Wildlife Experience, they will be better equipped for population management, wildlife protection and preservation, as well as land management. Kids will leave The Wildlife Experience with a greater respect and understanding of all things wild, ensuring a future of balance and harmony with wildlife and natural habitats.

Discovery Den is presented by FirstBank of Colorado. Cubs Corner is currently open and Discovery Den will open on Saturday, May 27, 2006. For more information on these galleries and The Wildlife Experience, call (720) 488-3300 or visit thewildlifeexperience.org.
