DENVER - April 18, 2007 - Dogs have held the title of “Man’sevr Best Friend” for thousands of years, but how did man and canine become companions? Wolf to Woof: The Story of Dogs sniffs out the facts on dogs and explores what makes man’s best friend’s relationship so unique.

Wolf to Woof is the largest and most comprehensive traveling exhibition ever created to explore the history, biology and development of dogs and the role of dogs in human societies. The exhibition is on display at The Wildlife Experience from June 2 through October 7.

Created in 2003 by the Los Angeles Museum of Natural History with a $1 million National Science Foundation Grant, the exhibit is now owned and toured by WonderWorks Exhibits Company.

Wolf to Woof consists of four themed sections that include multi-media displays, artifacts, photo murals and dioramas of taxidermied wild canines and sculpted modern dog breeds.

Section 1: Dogs come in all shapes and sizes
Visitors will see the versatility of dogs and how their appearance has changed through time – both naturally and through the help of humans. Visitors will learn the geographical origins and history of select domestic dog breeds, many species of wild canines and extinct canine relatives.

Section 2: A little wolf in every dog
Ever wonder what your dog is trying to tell you with his different barks? This section explores why dogs and wolves have similar behaviors and how and when they behave in similar or different ways. Visitors will have the opportunity to decipher what a dog is trying to say in a “Howling Booth” that will have information on how the tones dogs use to communicate are very similar to the tones used by humans.

Section 3: Dogs have skills to help us
People have utilized dogs’ sense of smell, heightened vision and hearing abilities to assist in therapy, rescue and assistance for people with disabilities. This section explores the history of how dogs and people have worked together for hundreds of years for hunting, herding and many other uses. Visitors can crawl into an avalanche scene and learn how a dog can rescue them if they’re ever caught in an avalanche.

Section 4: What can we do to help dogs?
This section explores what problems our modern world poses for dogs including pollution, hunting and habitat destruction and what is being done to solve these problems. It shows how coyotes have managed to survive and adapt despite human encroachment into their habitat and how the two can successfully coexist. Visitors also learn about responsible pet ownership, wolf reintroduction into Yellowstone National Park and current veterinarian science.

During the exhibition’s run at The Wildlife Experience, numerous “paw”-some activities are planned to offer visitors more in-depth experiences with canines, including:
  • Dog Days with My Best Friend – entries will be displayed throughout the summer and a “Weekly Woof” will be featured on our website
  • Live Wolves presentation – July 7th
  • Live Cheetah presentation – July 21st
  • Dog Day Expo – August 4th
  • Daily stories about dogs and wolves
  • Police Canine Unit visits and demonstrations
